SparkNotes needed to *freshen* their web presence. The project was presented with two specific goals:

  1. Create a clear information design that would help guide end-users through the Web site.
  2. Work within the existing design characteristics without changing the Web site's irreverent style.

A clever use of the Web site's message boards allowed the re-design team to conduct usability tests in real-time.

The color palette was based on the research found in Shigenobu Kobayashi’s book “Color Image Scale”.

The Web site is used for prolonged reading. Usability studies have shown that long periods of reading on a monitor will cause eye fatigue. To help reduce this, soft natural hues were chosen for complimentary site tools and promotions. The body copy is gray which helps reduce the contrast caused by black on white.

The design strategy was built from existing design elements, such as the site's icons. Each of the site's icons were recreated to help develop a sense of playfulness while being consistent.
